Event: Body & Spirit Connection (May 22nd)

Is Your Body Trying to Tell You Something?

Interactive presentation offered by Jean Riccio, LMT, about the Spirit/Body connection.
How living less than true and authentically can create pain, dysfunction, restriction, illness or disease in the body. Each section of the body will be explored to understand its symbolism. (Example: feet- "standing on our own two feet" = independence)

We will look at common "expressions" about the body, to see the potential literal truth beneath them. (example: "This job is killing me.") The goal of the presentation is to see our bodies in a more symbolic way, so that pain and illness may become a tool for looking at our lives from a spiritual perspective. Also, to listen to what we are saying about ourselves to others- and take notice, hear, heal ourselves and grow.

Massage for Stress Management

Experts estimate that over 90% of serious illness and disease (including heart attacks and cancer) are caused by stress.  We know about the detrimental effects of prolonged and heavy stress on our bodies, so how can we experience more calm instead?

One of the best ways to achieve a very deep level of complete relaxation of body and mind is to get a therapeutic massage.  Research done by Touch Research Institute, University of Miami School of Medicine, found significant changes in biochemistry as a result of massage therapy   Cortisol, a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland in response to stress, increases blood sugar levels and suppresses the immune system.  Prolonged elevated levels of cortisol is harmful to the body.  Massage therapy was shown to decrease cortisol levels by 31%.  Serotonin, a neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of well-being, also helps regulate mood, appetite, and sleep as well as contributes to cognitive functioning such as memory and learning.  Massage therapy caused serotonin levels to increase by 28%.  Dopamine, another neurotransmitter, activates pleasure centers in the brain.  It was found to increase by 31% following massage therapy.

Besides eating healthy foods, exercising, and getting adequate sleep, one of the best investments you can make in maintaining a healthy body and mind is to incorporate regular therapeutic massage into your self care routine.

FORGIVENESS - A Word from Jean

Forgiving others (and ourselves) is paramount to being healthy. Holding resentment ravages our body, mind and spirit. It can make us very sick.

Why do we hold resentments? I wonder if I hold resentment in order to be right, superior, or even to separate myself from another person. But it has only caused separation within myself. We are not whole, healthy, or happy when we are holding a grudge.

I'd like to share what I've been learning about myself lately. I notice that sometimes the very thing I am resenting is something that I am not accepting in myself. So, we can ask, "Is this in me too?" An opportunity for compassion- toward ourselves and others. Another "button" is a situation that reminds me of a different time when I felt hurt. Seeing that we're actually angry about something else, can help in letting go. New ways to get to the core of my anger, allowing me an opportunity to accept, forgive and love myself and others.

Ah, sweet peace.

"Love is an act of endless forgiveness, a tender look which becomes a habit."
-Peter Ustinov

"Some of us think holding on makes us strong; but sometimes it is letting go."
-Hermann Hesse

Acupuncture for Breech Presentation: Myth or Reality?

With an all time high rate of 32.8% for cesarian birth in our country, Acupuncture has recently gained popularity as a method of turning a breech baby or inducing labor naturally.  This article seeks to demystify this ancient approach as I have seen it work time and time again. Traditionally, the point named Zhi Yin or UB-67 , located on the lateral side of the pinky toe is used to turn a baby in breech presentation. Zhi Yin translates to “Reaching Yin.”  For those of you with some working knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine, one can understand how a fetus would be the utmost Yin (fluid, soft tissue, or very center) of a woman’s body as the fetus does not obtain its own Yang energy until it takes its first breath outside of the womb.
To offer assistance with breech presentation, often only one acupuncture appointment is needed. Typically the mother is instructed to continue using a technique called moxabustion at home for 10-20 minutes a day until her next sonogram or physical examination.

Explaining Myofascial Release Therapy

Myofascial Release is a therapeutic massage modality that can reduce pain by freeing restrictions in soft tissue due to stress, unnatural posture (computer work, driving, etc.), injury, prior surgery/scarring, poor form in athletic activities, and other causes.  It affects the deep tissue and can produce results that last longer than a regular massage or trigger point therapy alone.

Myofascial work releases restriction in the fascia.  Fascia wraps every muscle fiber cell, muscle, organ, bone; it is a three dimensional web-like structure of connection throughout the body.

Rather than gliding over the skin, the therapist engages the deeper layers of soft tissue in a sort of “pull” or “drag.”  When done properly, it should feel like a medium stretch in the muscle (rather than light or heavy).  It should not be painful.  Most people find it feels pleasant.  Myofascial treatment also may consist of a light, static, stretch-hold from 5-15 minutes when the muscle “gives up,” releasing the tension and extending to its normal (rather than tightened) length.  This release is very subtle and not usually recognized when it happens although clients usually report excellent results following myofascial treatment.

If you are experiencing any pain in your body, myofascial release can help eliminate it.

Natural Labor Induction: Does it Really Exist?

It’s all too often that I get a phone call from a frantic Mom-to-be or Father for that matter, desperate for labor to start. Reasons range from fear of the impending doom of a forced induction with pharmaceuticals to a scheduled C-section because they are overdue or high-risk, to just simply being ready to get the show on the road.  Many people are under the assumption that by taking a few herbs or doing a couple acupuncture points that are traditionally contraindicated during pregnancy, that you can make labor happen instantly.  This couldn’t be further from the truth!

The fact of the matter is that there is very little known about the mechanism of birth or what makes a baby decide that it is in fact time to make his or her grand introduction into the world.  Here are a few of the most commonly asked questions I get on the phone. Can acupuncture cause contractions? Yes sometimes. Can it help to make contractions more regular if they are already randomly occurring? Yes. Can you cause someone’s water to break? Probably not! Will you leave my office in labor? Highly unlikely, although the chance for naturally going into labor in the next 48 hours seems to jump significantly after you are over 40 weeks of gestation...

Perception is Reality

Perception is Reality
by Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit

Many problems or misunderstanding arise because of confusion between facts and opinions. Logically, if you can differentiate between facts and opinions, you will be able to avoid or overcome many of these problems and misunderstanding.
What is even more important is that often opinion, or perception, is more influential than fact, or reality, in shaping our future. This does not mean we can ignore facts, but we must realize that a person's perception of reality rather than the reality itself is more potent in determining the outcome of an event. Failure to appreciate this often results in problems and misunderstandings, which can be avoided or overcome if we have clear perception.
Let us start with a story. A sifu asked a student to practice "One-Finger Shooting Zen". A week passed, a month passed, two years passed, and the student was still practicing "One-Finger Shooting Zen" daily, while his sifu hardly taught him anything else.
This was a real story, the story of my sifu, Ho Fatt Nam, when he learned from my sigung, Yeong Fatt Khun. The daily practice of "One-Finger Shooting Zen" enabled my sifu to develop tremendous force not only for Dim Mak (an advanced kungfu art of dotting vital points) but also to heal people.
My sifu had a good perception. He promised himself that if he met a great master, he would do exactly what the master taught. Most other students would drop out. They had different perceptions. They probably thought that the master was fooling them. The reality was the same, a sifu asking his student to practice "One-Finger Shooting Zen" and hardly teaching him anything else, but due to different perceptions the results could be vastly different.
You can see the same principle operating in daily life though many people may not realize it. You are given a difficult job by your boss. Because you are a Shaolin Wahnam student and view everything the Shaolin Wahnam way (instead of the negative way), you perceive your difficult job as an interesting challenge and do your best. As a result you later gain a promotion - by your boss or by yourself becoming your own boss after having gone through challenging training.
Most other people in the same situation would have different perceptions. Some would try to pass the job to someone else, like you, knowing that they would still get the same pay. Others might do the job grudgingly and produce mediocre or poor result. The reality is the same - a difficult job to be done - but due to different perceptions of the same reality, the outcome can be very different.
Can the perception be always positive? Can there be any events, persons or beliefs that are so negative that you can't have any positive perception of them?
Yes, perception can always be positive if you choose to. It is your choice.
No, there are no events, persons or beliefs that are by themselves so negative that you can't have a positive perception of. We are talking about perception, not the reality itself. In reality the event, person or belief can be negative, but you still can have a positive perception of it.
Suppose you have lost a lot of money in a bad investment. This is reality. No matter how you perceive it, you cannot change the fact that you have lost a lot of money. But your perception of this negative event will certainly and strongly affect what and how your future will enfold.
We may broadly generalize your possible perceptions into three categories: negative, neutral and positive.
You may perceive yourself as stupid, and you become depressed. You may perceive that the fault actually lies with your wife, who nags you, and you become angry. These are negative perceptions. And it is not difficult to see how miserable these negative perceptions will make you.
You may perceive it as a way of life, sometimes you lose, and sometimes you gain. Or you may perceive that losing money is a price everyone pays to learn about investment. These are neutral perceptions. You may be down for a while, but eventually you can get over it.
You may perceive it philosophically, regarding it a blessing in disguise. It is a wake-up call: you lose money in investment, not in drugs or gambling, which may make you addicted and is far worse. Or you may perceive it as a drastic learning opportunity. You promise yourself that eventually you will make back many times that money in an honest, wholesome way. These are positive perceptions that will lead to eventual success. Indeed, many people owe their success, spiritual or financial, to some initial setbacks.
If we just think of good things, are we just dreaming? No, we are not just dreaming. We dare to dream, but we are ready and capable of putting in effort to make our dreams come true. Our Shaolin Wahnam training gives us mental clarity that enables us to have noble perceptions, and tremendous energy that enables us to put in the necessary effort.
Thoughts create reality. This is a great cosmic truth taught by ancient masters and confirmed by modern scientists. An electron is a particle or a wave depending on how the investigating scientist thinks about it. The Buddha teaches that karma, which means cause and effect, is the result of thoughts, speech and deeds in that order of importance.
So, whatever events, persons, beliefs, problems or difficulties you interact with, always have positive perceptions of them. Try it out for a month, and examine the result yourself.
